Reduce video size without misleading quality promises
Estimate a video bitrate budget, distinguish re-encoding from stream copying and check captions, motion and audio after export.
A smaller file requires a trade-off
Removing an unused audio track or trimming unwanted material can reduce size without re-encoding retained streams when the editing tool supports it. Reducing bitrate, resolution or frame rate generally changes the picture. “No quality loss” may mean no obvious visual difference at a viewing size, not identical decoded pixels. Keep the original until the recipient accepts the export.
Estimate the available bitrate
For a rough budget, divide the target bytes by duration in seconds and multiply by eight. A 10,000,000-byte limit for 60 seconds allows about 1.33 megabits per second for everything, including audio and container overhead. Reserve room for those before choosing the video rate. Constant-quality encoders produce variable file sizes, so a quality slider cannot promise an exact byte limit.
Choose changes based on the footage
Reduce excessive resolution when a clip will be watched on a small display. Preserve frame rate for motion that needs it; slides and a talking head have different requirements from fast sport. Inspect tiny captions, screen text and dark gradients. When joining clips, check their dimensions, orientation, frame rates and audio layout. A container change alone does not reconcile incompatible streams.

Export a short representative section, inspect it at the intended display size and adjust before processing the full video. Open the final download in the destination app and verify duration, audio sync, orientation and file size. A successful encode is only one part of a usable delivery.
